Jenin Under Siege – A Repeat of Gaza’s Tragedy in the West Bank

As the world’s attention remains fixed on the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Gaza, a new wave of destruction has emerged in the occupied West Bank. In the city of Jenin, Israeli military forces have launched their largest assault in more than two decades, bringing scenes of devastation eerily reminiscent of those we’ve witnessed in Gaza. Over the past week, Jenin has become a battleground, leaving behind a trail of death, displacement, and ruin.

The Latest Assault on Jenin

Beginning on August 28, 2024, Israeli forces initiated a massive military campaign in the West Bank, focusing on Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas. The operation, the largest since the early 2000s, has left at least 20 Palestinians dead and countless more injured. As bulldozers and airstrikes flattened homes and roads, thousands of Palestinians were displaced, struggling to secure even basic necessities like food and water amidst the chaos.

This deadly raid is part of a broader campaign that has killed over 40,000 Palestinians since the escalation of violence began following the October 2023 Gaza war. The Jenin refugee camp, housing nearly 50,000 people, has been the epicenter of these assaults, with Israeli forces bulldozing streets, cutting off access to water, and obstructing ambulances from reaching the wounded.

Repeating History: From Gaza to Jenin

The siege on Jenin is painfully familiar. The same tactics of destruction—bulldozing homes, bombing civilian areas, cutting off essential supplies—have been used in Gaza for years. What began in Gaza is now being repeated in the West Bank, as Israel’s military justifies its actions as part of a counterterrorism campaign. But the human toll is undeniable: civilian casualties, destroyed homes, and a population living in fear.

The Urgency of Action

It’s time for the international community to pay attention. The assault on Jenin is not an isolated event; it is a continuation of the violence that has plagued the Palestinian people for decades. As the world has seen in Gaza, these military operations leave behind broken families, devastated communities, and a generation of children traumatized by the horrors of war.

At Palshekel, we believe that standing on the sidelines is no longer an option. The West Bank, like Gaza, is facing a humanitarian crisis that demands immediate attention. With over 70% of Jenin’s streets bulldozed, 80% of the city’s water cut off, and families being forcibly displaced from their homes, the time for action is now.
